L’Association Tunisienne pour la Sauvegarde des Musées et des Sites Archéologiques

The Tunisian Association for the Safeguarding of Museums and Archaeological Sites “TOURATH Heritage” is a young association whose visa was obtained under number 2664 on May 25, 2010. Its objective is to contribute to the efforts of the State and of civil society in preserving the national heritage and developing patronage.

To this end, “TOURATH Patrimoine” undertakes to promote:

  • Participation in the safeguarding of monuments and archaeological sites in Tunisia.
  • Exchange between associations and organizations operating in the heritage field at the national, Mediterranean and international levels.
  • The development of cultural tourism.

With its three thousand years of history and its innumerable archaeological, architectural and cultural sites, Tunisia has potential reservoirs for the development and enhancement of heritage. This association, the first of its kind in Tunisia, aims to bring heritage businesses together and we hope it will spearhead a policy of alliance between the economy and culture. It is not only a question of restoring and maintaining historic monuments, but also of promoting investments linked to heritage with an economic approach. Heritage will thus be able to shed its negative image of financial burden and transform itself into a source of investment and wealth creation, thus contributing effectively to the economic development of the country.

Safeguarding and protecting heritage is indeed a matter for everyone, Tunisian citizens, political power and civil society. It is a heritage we have received from the past and it is our duty to pass it on to future generations. It is also an economic issue and an important vector of development allowing countries and regions to establish their historical and cultural dimension.
