The Zayed International Prize for the Environment is the world's most valuable environmental award, worth US$1 million. It was established in 1999 by UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in recognition of the philosophy, vision and achievements of former President, the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Mercy be upon him, who worked tirelessly to preserve and protect the environment for future generations of his country, the region and in support of global initiatives such as the Agenda 21, the Millennium Development Goals, the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation for Sustainable Development, outcomes of Rio+20 & Sustainable Development Goals. To recognize and promote major pioneering contributions in the field of environment and sustainable development, in accordance with the development philosophy and vision of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and in support of global initiatives such as the Agenda 21, the Millennium Development Goals, and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation for Sustainable Development.
