Palestinian Hydrology Group is the largest Palestinian NGO working to improve access to water and sanitation services, and to monitor pollution and climate change in the occupied Palestinian territory.

The Palestinian Hydrology Group (PHG) was established in 1987 as an independent specialized institution dedicated to develop and protect the water and environmental resources; to insure more public accessibility to adequate water supply sources and sanitary conditions; and to develop a proper information systems and technologies including GIS.

Given the rapidly deteriorating water situation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and the neglect of basic water supply infrastructure during the mid eighties early nineties and the eruption of Intifada, the Group saw its immediate task as to respond to the emergency situation through carrying out development work and promoting the more effective and efficient use and reuse of existing all type of water resources. Accordingly, the Group undertook activities which included: developing natural springs and using their water for both drinking and agriculture and create job opportunities for the workers who lost their jobs during the Intifada, rehabilitating groundwater wells, developing rain fed catchment systems for enhancing water supply for irrigation and domestic uses, developing local water supply systems and promoting new technologies and techniques on the best practices for water conservation of the scarce resources from both quantity and quality perspectives.

The Group has also tried to address critical local and regional technical, economic, social and political water resource management issues where natural scarcity, pollution threats and the Israeli control over Palestinian water resources have made it potentially one of the world’s most fragile water systems.

Following the signature of Interim Peace Agreement and the creation of Palestinian Water Authority, PHG has modified its role and activities to match the newly emerging situation and developed a multi disciplinary expertise to address all the issues mentioned earlier and even more to address stakeholder engagement processes in decision making as well as promoting their awareness and building their capacity. However, following to the eruption of the second Intifada in 2000, PHG was obliged to respond to the emergency situation and to help secure water for the besieged people across the Palestinian Territory.

Finally, PHG has adopted the environmental integrated approach in all its activities and tried to promote environmental friendly solutions for local problems through developing appropriate water and sanitation technologies that aims at minimizing negative impacts and maximizing the positive ones.
