The United Nations system in Mauritania has thirty nine agencies involved in all the country. Seven of them are directly represented, it is the FAO, UNHCR, WHO, WFP, UNDP, UNFPA and UNICEF.

The agencies represented in Mauritania adopted in December 1999 coordinating the charter which aims to improve the effectiveness of the UN system and its impact, and to present to the government and civil society a consistent image of the United Nations, reflecting its priorities.

Coordinated primarily by the Resident Coordinator, who is the designated representative of the Secretary-General and head of the United Nations country team.

The Resident Coordinator represents all non-resident agencies with operations in Mauritania and associated funds. This role falls to the UNDP Resident Representative.

The country team comprising the heads of all resident agencies is the main decision-making body within the UN system. It is suitable strategies to implement and coordinate the activities of agencies at the country level in the areas of programming, administration, communication and monitoring and evaluation.

The Resident Coordinator and the country team are assisted by an inter-agency unit, the support unit in the country team (CAEP). It contributes to the conceptual level, programmatic and operational coordination of activities System agencies UN Islamic Republic of Mauritania and further develop common services agencies.
