Our History

His Majesty King Hussein led the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan for 47 years between 1952 and 1999. Under his leadership, Jordan became a regional model for achievements in education, healthcare, socio-economic development and political liberalization.

In spite of severely limited resources, Jordan achieved human development indicators among the highest in the developing world - and in some cases, on par with developed countries. These accomplishments reflected King Hussein's passionate belief in the power and potential of each citizen to contribute meaningfully to national development, as well as to regional peace-building.

Shortly after King Hussein passed away in 1999, the King Hussein Foundation (KHF) was established by Royal Decree to continue his humanitarian vision and legacy. The same year, the King Hussein Foundation International, a non-profit 501c(3) non-governmental organization, was founded to ensure that the international community would also benefit from this vision and legacy.

In Jordan, the Foundation's Board of Trustees formed an affiliation between the Noor Al Hussein Foundation (NHF) and KHF to expand and strengthen the community development models pioneered by NHF in the Kingdom since 1985.

King Hussein was dedicated to applying the principles of democracy, justice and peace within Jordan and among nations. He believed in the power of education to shape the future, and in the potential in each individual to effect change in our communities. Today, KHF continues to uphold these fundamental values.
