From its humble beginnings in 1956, when it was started by the late Mrs. Leela Jashnamal and her group of enterprising Indian ladies, the Indian Ladies Association (ILA) has withstood the test of time to emerge today as one of the leading social and charitable organizations in the Kingdom of Bahrain. In all its endeavors, the ILA has been fortunate to receive the patronage of the Ladies of the Royal Family of Bahrain and the authorities of the Kingdom of Bahrain. Visits to old age homes, child care homes and other rehabilitation centers; form the core of our community activities, as does the provision of home-cooked meals & entertainment to expatriate laborers, the orgranization of free medical camps and the running of adult literacy classes. However, the flagship activity of ILA is the running of Sneha, a center for children with special needs.

SNEHA, a division of the ILA - What began as an informal playgroup for special children in December 1987 by four of our dedicated members, has now grown into a thriving centre with 20 children of different nationalities. These children have different disabilities like Down's syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, mental retardation and associated physical disabilities. Two qualified teachers and our dedicated volunteers help the children individually and collectively to acquire functional literacy, numerical skills, life skills, art and craft and basic cooking lessons. Occasional outdoor visits and educational tours are arranged for the children.
