EU relations with Algeria date back to the early years of independence. They were realized in 1976 with the signing of the Cooperation Agreement and the opening of the EU Delegation in Algeria in July 1979. For 35 years, the EU finances projects in support reforms undertaken by the Algeria in its development and modernization.

The Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (Euromed), established in 1995 with the goal of building a space of peace, security and shared prosperity on the two shores of the Mediterranean, led to the signing of the Association Agreement between EU and Algeria in 2002. the main purpose of this Agreement is to promote bilateral trade and closer to enjoying the achievements of European construction. On this basis, the cooperation between the EU and Algeria has deepened and refined over the years to achieve a partnership that touches many dimensions of everyday life in our countries (justice, employment, transportation, environment, heritage, SMEs etc.). Obviously, that Euro-Algerian relations enrich, strengthening, powerful and multiple links between Algeria and the countries of the Union.

Politically, Algeria is a key strategic partner for the EU in the Mediterranean region and Africa. In this day and age, it is normal that the dialogue on security issues is an integral part of our cooperation. By their cross-border and global nature, the security challenges we face today are not manageable at the purely national level. The EU recognizes the Algerian experience and expertise in the security situation and appreciates them at fair value.

In December 2011, Algeria has decided to participate in the European Neighbourhood Policy, which is not limited to the implementation of cooperation or commercial agreements, but also included political, economic and rapprochement between the peoples on both sides Mediterranean. Based on a common adherence to democratic principles, the rule of law, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. The implementation of an action plan, currently under negotiation, will allow a closer approximation. This plan contains an agenda of trade reform and joint action in the areas chosen by both parties, based on specific needs and priorities of Algeria.
