The mission of AFVP enable young people to express their solidarity by participating with them in missions as volunteers, combining technical development and human promotion.

The French Association of Volunteers for Progress was created in 1963 at the initiative of General de Gaulle with several objectives:

allow young French to express their solidarity with the southern countries
respond to the creation of the Peace Corps US

During its activity, AFVP was present in forty countries with over 350 volunteers commonly known as VP (Progress Volunteer). In 2006, she became "Operator of the Foreign Ministry" for everything concerning the International Solidarity Volunteering. As such, the state contributed to the financing of AFVP to 60% of the budget.

Her organization was based on a general delegation in France is engaged in recruiting volunteers and their training for two weeks, manager of Regional Representations work AFVP (building partnerships especially) in a group of countries (usually 6 or 7) of national representations in support and supervision of volunteers on the ground. After a thorough restructuring started in 2004, AFVP was taken to outsource the monitoring and supervision of the VP to local autonomous structures, often composed of former employees of AFVP.

He / she has the human qualities required for an expatriate in a different social and cultural environment: independence, openness, curiosity, adaptability, leadership and communication, listening ... The VP have on average 26 years. 60% of VP are in AFVP their first professional experience.

On 1 October 2009, France became AFVP Volunteers, on the initiative of public authorities and associations.

The mission of the Volunteers, however, remains the same 24 months of cultural discovery and transfer of professional skills. In a spirit of sharing and exchange, the Volunteers accompany, support and train local stakeholders involved in the implementation of development actions: associations, NGOs, local authorities, small businesses ... They contribute to their professionalization (project management ...) as much as their openness to the outside world (work in networks).

In everyday life, the Volunteers team up with leaders, national technicians and managers. With solid general training, areas for action are many: economic development, infrastructure, structuring of agricultural sectors, education, health and social work, development of the cultural and environmental heritage
